Skimboards can come in an array of sizes, from small boogie boards to beefy wave-riders. This is great in principle because anyone can get into the sport and find something that fits their body. In practice, though, picking the right board can be tricky just by eyeballing the selection. When presented with two boards that differ in length by just two inches, how can one know which is ideal for them?
Fortunately, skimboard size charts are available. Before you shop for your next board here at East Coast Skimboards, feel free to consult the handy-dandy lists in this blog post. Read on so you can also learn more about the value of picking the right skimboard size.
Why Does Skimboard Size Even Matter?
The length and thickness of a skimboard may not seem all that important at the outset. Many novices prioritize other factors like reputation, cost, texture, and aesthetics when picking their first one. The only thought some people give to size is simply to hold it against their body or to assume that bigger means sturdier. Those approaches are better than nothing, though it is hardly scientific.
The truth is that the size relation between skimboard and skimboarder can significantly affect the experience. For an obvious example, think about the children. Kids are usually much shorter and lighter in weight than adults, so controlling adult-sized boards would be throwing them too far into the deep end. Starting them off with something smaller will be better at teaching them balance and technique.
That is what it comes down to control. Getting the proper length makes grabbing on and standing upright easier. This is the essence of skimboarding. If you get plenty of practice and still wipe out constantly, the culprit just might be a board of inappropriate size.
The Charts
The most basic thing to understand about skimboard size is that bigger boards are better suited for people of greater heights and weights. That is about as detailed as our advice can get. See, there is no industry standard for skimboard sizes, nor a cultural one.
The norm for skimboard designers is to determine the most appropriate height and weight ranges for users of each board type. They reach their figures based on the board’s length and thickness, then make them available so skimming fans can see which boards fit them best.
Here at East Coast Skimboards, we primarily offer boards from two top brands: Zap and Exile. By having different products, each company has its skimboard size chart. For your convenience, this blog includes both of them in one place that you can consult at any time. Look for the ones that match your height and weight.
